Super fund — does it actually matter which one I pick on day one?

Anonymous Calm Rosella · 14 May 2026

My employer's default is AustralianSuper. I keep reading I should "compare fees and returns" before agreeing but honestly I don't know what good looks like at all. Is the default usually fine for someone planning to be in Australia 5+ years? Or is this one of those "small choice that compounds into a huge difference" things I'll regret?

Default fund (AustralianSuper, HostPlus, REST) is fine for most people. Switch the investment option to "high growth" — that's the right pick if you're 5+ years from retirement.

Don't roll multiple funds into one until you check insurance. Default insurance gets cancelled on consolidation and you'll need to re-apply (which means health questions).

Compounds, but the difference between "fine" and "ideal" is maybe $80k over 30 years. Not nothing — but not the thing to optimise on day 3 either.
