Tax File Number arrived today, hooray. But my employer's been taxing me at 47%?

Anonymous Worried Bandicoot · 16 May 2026

Started work in February, gave my employer my TFN application receipt because the actual TFN took 6 weeks. Just got the TFN, gave it to payroll, expected things to normalise. Latest payslip — still 47% withheld. Apparently I'm on the "no TFN" rate until my form is processed in their system. Anyone else been through this? Do I claim the overpaid tax back at EOFY or is there a faster path?

Same thing happened to me. You'll claim it back at EOFY but won't get the cash until you lodge the return. Make sure payroll has the TFN in the right field, not just the declaration form.

Confirm in writing that they've updated it. Don't trust "yeah we'll get to it" — different systems often need separate updates.

If the underwithholding is several thousand, ask payroll to submit a varied tax-free threshold form (NAT 3092) to fast-track the recovery via lower withholding for the rest of the year.
