Inner-west Melbourne vs outer suburbs — is the commute really that bad?

Anonymous Brave Bilby · 16 May 2026

Got two rental options. A small 1-bed in Brunswick for $530/wk, 25 minutes to CBD on the 19 tram. Or a much bigger 2-bed in Sunshine for $410/wk, 35 minutes train. I keep hearing "Sunshine is rough" but also "Brunswick is overpriced". Anyone living in either right now willing to give an honest 2026 read?

Brunswick was the right call for me. Price difference disappears when you factor in lost time, Uber/PT at weekends, and the "I can walk to dinner" lifestyle. Sunshine 5:45pm train is real.

Sunshine is fine, ignore the old reputation. Big Italian and Vietnamese community, great food. But yes the train at peak hour will test you.

2-bed in Sunshine = you can have a study/spare room. Matters way more than you think if you WFH even 2 days a week.
