Housing
Renting, share houses, deposits, moving suburbs, dealing with agents.
Why are share-house ads asking for 6 weeks bond and 4 weeks rent upfront?
Looking at Flatmates.com.au and a lot of listings want what feels like a deposit on a small car. 6 weeks bond + 4 weeks rent + $200 "key fee" = $4,800 before I've unpacked. Is this normal in Sydney/Melbourne right now or am I being targeted because my profile says "new to Australia"? Asking because I'd rather know than feel paranoid.

Inner-west Melbourne vs outer suburbs — is the commute really that bad?
Got two rental options. A small 1-bed in Brunswick for $530/wk, 25 minutes to CBD on the 19 tram. Or a much bigger 2-bed in Sunshine for $410/wk, 35 minutes train. I keep hearing "Sunshine is rough" but also "Brunswick is overpriced". Anyone living in either right now willing to give an honest 2026 read?

Rental application got rejected — no rental history in Australia. What do I do?
Third rejection in two weeks. Have a stable job ($95k, 6 months), good savings, no kids, no pets. Every rejection email says some version of "stronger applicants" but I suspect it's the empty rental history field. What worked for people in this position? Pay 3 months upfront? Get a guarantor? Use one of those rent-guarantee services that everyone says are a scam? Genuinely lost.
