If you've arrived in October or November, you'll notice in mid-December that the country starts to wind down. By 23 December, most professional Australia has switched off until mid-January.
What closes
- Most professional and corporate offices, 24 December through to mid-January.
- Most government departments (skeleton staff only — Centrelink/Services Australia centres often closed on public holidays and at reduced hours).
- Smaller specialist medical clinics, dentists, vets (some) — often closed for 2–3 weeks.
- Schools — Term 4 finishes mid-to-late December, Term 1 starts late January / early February.
- Childcare centres — many close for at least a fortnight.
- Court hearings — civil courts in most states adjourn for the long vacation, only urgent matters heard.
What stays open
- Supermarkets (with reduced hours on public holidays — Christmas Day is the only day most are fully closed).
- Hospitals and 24-hour medical centres.
- Emergency services (always).
- Most cafés, restaurants and bars — especially in tourist areas.
- Major retail (with reduced hours on public holidays — check each state's trading hour rules).
- Public transport — runs on Sunday timetables on public holidays.
Public holidays in the shutdown window
- 25 December — Christmas Day
- 26 December — Boxing Day
- 1 January — New Year's Day
- 26 January — Australia Day
- Various state-specific days around late December.
Practical planning
- If you arrive in December, do urgent paperwork (TFN, bank account, Medicare) before 23 December. After that, expect everything to take a few weeks longer.
- Schedule any specialist medical appointment well in advance — January is the bottleneck month.
- Most rental moves try to avoid this period. Lease end-dates often shift to late January.
- If your visa, lease, or licence renewal falls in this window, give it more lead time than you'd think reasonable.
