Family arriving next week — what should I have ready in the apartment?

Anonymous Practical Possum · 13 May 2026

My wife and 4-year-old land in Brisbane next Tuesday. I've been here on my own for 2 months and the apartment is, uh, minimalist. (Mattress on floor, kettle, two plates.) What's on your "must have before family lands" list? I've got a basic Kmart run planned for Saturday. Trying to avoid the "we don't have a single Tupperware container" moment on day one.

Kmart list: bedding for everyone, 8 towels, basic cookware set, 10 plates/bowls/cutlery, Tupperware multipack, kettle, basic toolkit, doormat, way more hangers than you think. ~$400-500 total.

For the 4-year-old: pack a "first day" bag with snacks, a familiar toy from home, and 2 changes of clothes for them. Long flight + jetlag + new place = potential meltdown.

Stock the fridge with comfort food from home BEFORE they land. Familiar smells help more than you'd think on day one.
