First Aussie supermarket shop — what brands are actually any good?

Anonymous Curious Echidna · 16 May 2026

Walked into a Coles for the first time yesterday and stood paralysed in the bread aisle for 10 minutes. Everything looks the same and the names mean nothing to me yet. Quick taste-test ask: what are the safe "you can't go wrong" brands for milk, bread, yoghurt, eggs, instant coffee, frozen pizza, and laundry detergent? Bonus points if there's a home-brand version that's genuinely fine because $$$.

Helga's bread, Cobram Estate olive oil, Greek-style yoghurt from Tamar Valley, Vittoria coffee. Coles home brand pasta and tinned tomatoes are fine. Avoid the supermarket pre-made sushi.

Honestly Aldi for almost everything except meat. The Aldi versions of cleaning products and laundry detergent are identical in quality to the name brands at half the price.

Avoid: "fresh" salmon labelled Atlantic in the meat fridge — usually been there a week. Buy frozen instead, it's fresher than the "fresh".
